Patience, people

Being in the family of a person in the process of becoming legend must be about as hard as doing the work to become a legend.

Quote of note:

Vernon King said he hasn't been to a board meeting recently and learned about the power struggle from an article in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

"The article was sort of a surprise to me. I definitely have some concerns. I am concerned about any conflict that is taking place," he said. "I would like to see that it moves in the direction of trying to educate people in terms of my uncle's philosophy."

Leadership roles at reopened King Center unclear

The doors of the King Center are back open.

But there is still no indication of which King heir, Martin Luther King III or younger brother Dexter Scott King, is in charge.

On Monday the brothers again refused to release details of what people familiar with the center's operations call a power struggle for control of the Auburn Avenue landmark, the site of their father's tomb.

"I think it is just business," said Vernon King, a first cousin of the brothers and member of the center's board of directors. Vernon King played down the significance of any disagreements between Martin and Dexter King.

"They have been close to a point," Vernon King said. "They have their philosophical differences, but as brothers, they are close."
