Final Vote Tally in Oakland Race
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
OAKLAND, Calif., June 17 (AP) — After nearly two weeks of ballot counting, former Representative Ron Dellums emerged as the winner of the Oakland mayor's race on Saturday when his chief rival said he would not challenge the election results.
His rival, Ignacio De La Fuente, called Mr. Dellums at home to concede, said Mike Healy, a spokesman for the Dellums campaign.
"Ignacio was very gracious," Mr. Healy said. "He said he wants to work with Ron for a better Oakland, and that it was a great campaign."
Speaking to reporters from his Oakland home, Mr. De La Fuente confirmed that he placed a concession call to Mr. Dellums, but refused to answer any questions.
The final ballot count released late Friday showed Mr. Dellums winning the simple majority needed to avoid a November runoff against Mr. De La Fuente, the City Council president.
