With back pay.
I just don't buy the idea that a little tequila, or even a lot of tequila, can somehow turn an unbiased person into a raging anti-Semite -- or a racist, or a homophobe or a bigot of any kind, for that matter. Alcohol removes inhibitions, allowing all kinds of opinions to escape uncensored. But you can't blame alcohol for forming and nurturing those opinions in the first place.

Mel Gibson: It Wasn't Just the Tequila Talking
By Eugene Robinson
Tuesday, August 1, 2006; A17
Let's not cut Mel Gibson even the tiniest bit of slack over the ugly tirade he inflicted on the sheriff's deputy who pulled him over in his Lexus as he roared drunkenly down the Pacific Coast Highway at nearly twice the speed limit.
If anyone missed the story over the weekend, although I don't know how that would be possible, Gibson was obnoxious, belligerent and self-important when the arresting officer pulled him over. In other words, just your average traffic stop in Malibu -- until Gibson proceeded to blame the ills and injustices of the world, presumably including his own immediate predicament, on the Jews.
"[Expletive] Jews," Gibson said, according to a copy of the arrest report posted on the entertainment news Web site TMZ.com and later confirmed by the Los Angeles Times. "The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world." To the officer, he demanded: "Are you a Jew?"

Mel Gibson Unplugged
He may not be ruined, but he is definitely exposed. Of all the things to rant about when drunk, why Jews? Running to detox is not going to help this man. Alcohol isn't the problem. Ignorance is.
I know very little about
I know very little about Hollywood and pay even less attention to the trials and tribulations of its leading and lesser lights but I suspect that Mel Gibson's career is far from over. In fact, this nasty incident will prove to be nothing more than a small speed bump on his career highway. It is not likely that Gibson is the first or the last movie star holding anti-Semitic views. I imagine that such attitudes among Hollywood's royalty were probably more prevalent when folks like Louis B. Mayer, Samuel Goldwyn, Jack Warner (Jacob Leonard Warner) and Irving Thalberg called the shots. All these folks were at bottom businessmen. As long as a movie star's bigotry did not affect the profitablity of his or her films the studio heads, many of whom were Jews, probably did not care. They understood the audiences for their films better than those comprising the audiences understood themselves.
Arsenio Hall - Help me out
Arsenio Hall - Help me out here. I never watched his show because I never watch any talk shows (Dick Cavett was the only exception but he was covering different territory.) but did Br. Arsenio blow himself off the air or was it poor ratings? I never heard or read one way or the other.
He gave an unscripted
He gave an unscripted interview to Louis Farrakhan on the upcoming Million Man March. It was widely felt he should have attacked Farrakhan for being anti-Semitic. Because he didn't, he stopped getting the A-list bookings (I read this in a paper magazine, an actual interview with a booking agent or whatever you call those guys).
Without the A-listers, he couldn't survive the bad monologues. Â
Repudiate
Arsenio's interview was conducted at a time when every black person with breath in their lungs and a tongue in their mouth was expected to repudiate Louis Farrakhan, Steve Cokely, Jesse Jackson and every else who had an unkind word to say about the state of Israel. Arsenio went where a comedian in Hollywood could not go. Without an independent black financial base and distribution network, the end result was predictable. The terms of the so-called "friendship" are fairly clear. Repudiate your evil leaders, ignore or cosign our evil leaders - and we'll continue to subsidize your tokens. Deviate and do for self, byatches!
Ah, the good old days
The phrasing, if I remember correctly, was, 'I publicly call on [all] [responsible] black leaders to repudiate the vicious whatever spread by the Black Enemy of the Month."
Got it! Br. Arsenio must
Got it! Br. Arsenio must have thought that when got his own show he had died and went to heaven. I guess it must have hurt him to no end when he discovered that it just a high profile form of volunteered slavery. Now we have shows hosted by blacks who don't ask any substantive questions and everybody seems happy. (BTW, I am not talking about Oprah here.)
