WASHINGTON - Rep. Mark Foley, R-Fla., is considering resigning from the House in the wake of questions about e-mails he wrote a former Capitol male page, congressional officials said Friday.

These officials said a decision appeared imminent.

He says there was nothing inappropriate in the emails, but why would you consider resigning if that were the case?

And the pathetic thing is how little your sexual mode has to do with your competence. Not that Foley can be all that competant given that he volunteered for this grief by hiding and supporting those that would make him hide.

The Wash and the Rinse

How many of you out there remember the old folks saying that if such and such doesn't come out in the wash, it will come out in the rinse? This is an example of the rinse.

The Boston Phoenix published this editorial about Mark Foley in its May 30 - June 5 2003 issue. The title of the editorial was "Being Gay in the GOP - Congressman Mark Foley: A model of political hypocrisy and personal cowardice "

Foley may be a hypocrite and weak, but in all fairness, he did not engage in the homophobic posturing that seems so attractive to many of his GOP colleagues. In any case, his emails to the former page were inappropriate and any adult who doesn't think so is probably a member of NAMBLA.

Ironically,you've provided a

Ironically, you've provided a compelling explanation of why he must resign.

Logically, one would expect it would be the campaign of a seething homophobic cretin that would suffer for such revelations, not, say, that of a social libertarian (say, one who campaigns on privacy protection and respect for gays).   Yet the opposite is true, and woe betide the social libertarian whose private life is not above reproach!

Among friends I shall admit I am very well and personally acquainted with the fundamentalist religious right, and know from long experience that sexual sanctimony and pecksniffian hypocrisy is like electric current and magnetic fields: inseparable and mutally sustaining. Hypocrisy is, amongst such folk, a positive social good: it enables standards that makes us all guilty, and susceptible to control.
