So Far, Obama Can’t Take Black Vote for Granted
By RACHEL L. SWARNSWASHINGTON, Feb. 1 — He is hailed by his supporters as the hope of an increasingly multicultural nation, a political phenomenon who can wow white voters while carrying the aspirations of African-Americans all the way to the White House.
So why are some black voters so uneasy about Senator Barack Obama?
Not uneasy...unconvinced. And there's really no rush right now...he's got roughly a year to let folks know who he is.
Frankly, I think he's done pretty well over the last few weeks. I like how he handled Fox News, I like how he handled Sen. Biden's gaff and I like his introduction of a binding resolution to get out of Iraq.
But only one of those judgments have to do with his being Black.

i am not fully convinced that this isn't a plant.
and dickerson must be smoking a peculiar kind of crack. he isn't african, though his father was. further, they have nothing in common....just because he has a white mother and a kenyan father? NOTHING in common? again, from the same woman who proclaimed the end of blackness?
because we've got so far to go but there is growing interest in the campaign those column inches need to be filled. but i do not believe this meme is a "natural" one.  Â

Off the top of my head I'd say three out of four articles on Black folks are plants.
Dickerson is getting a lot of mileage out of that nonsense she wrote for Slate. The City Journal article Michael is so pleased about quotes her (and McWhorter and a couple other misfits).Â
If you want to hide something...
it's in the first book. if folks wanted to find some basis for an affinity to him, they could walk to their local bookstore and pick up the first book - and then make some determination...or they could just put together 10 seconds of spin here and 2 minutes of spin there - and then make up their minds just before the election. whatever...not only is it irrelevant whether or not the story is a plant (and I'm inclined to agree with both of you), but the bigger issue is the question of how can he communicate authenthically with an electorate that is ill-equipped to do the essential heavy-lifting of post-election politics? dickerson and her crew don't have answers for that - though, they have all-kinna-shit to say about his "identity." whatever.
and P - it's like you've said in the title...black folk consistently vote their interests (unlike middle class white folks) and that vote can't be taken for granted because it's not promised to anyone - and is only accorded to dismalcraps based on the extremism within the republiphuks. Â so, there is work ahead - but the true benefit comes once that prodigal candidate is IN office - and has viable economic, cultural and political partners to work with, push forward, subsidize, authorize, and stabilize.
the bigger issue is the
"authentically" sounds like some specific style is needed. Okay, but I think that style is "direct simplicity." I've always felt the weight of communicating is on the communicator so he has to keep it close to earth.
Style?
nope...wasn't thinking that at all. plain language about what really resonates with people - delivered without alot of fluff is what will work best when you don't have your own church. the pomp and circumstance are cool for td jakes and that group, but it wouldn't win the day for obama. he should be himself and say what he has to say.
