Only 11 percent of black youth, 12 percent of Hispanic youth and four percent of white youth believe it is very likely that racism will be eliminated in their lifetime.
I think it interesting that fewer white kids think racism will end before they die than Black and Latino kids.
Marginalization of black youth in US widespread: study
by Mira ObermanThu Feb 1, 9:44 AM ET
A new study has found widespread marginalization and alienation among young African Americans who say the government cares little about them and do not believe that racism will be eliminated in their lifetime.
The study belies assertions by the Bush administration that affirmative action programs are no longer necessary and shows that achievements such as Senator Barack Obama (news, bio, voting record)'s bid to become the nation's first black president are far from the norm, the study's director said.
"It is a problem that we keep suggesting that racism is eliminated because in fact it's not," said Cathy Cohen, a political science professor at the University of Chicago who conducted a national survey of 1,590 black, white and Hispanic people aged 15 to 25.
"They do feel quite alienated, almost like secondary citizens at times in this country. So the rhetoric of a color-blind society where you're only judged on merit is not their reality."
Nearly half of the black youths surveyed believe the government treats immigrants better than black people, and 56 percent believe that leaders in government care very little about people like them.
More than 60 percent said they think discrimination makes it harder for blacks to get ahead, and 54 percent said that blacks receive a poorer education than whites.
Only 11 percent of black youth, 12 percent of Hispanic youth and four percent of white youth believe it is very likely that racism will be eliminated in their lifetime.
The survey has a margin of error of less than two percent.

I guess the white kids have
I guess the white kids have some notion of the concept of 'vested' interest. Can't blame them. If we can now get the adults of our community to understand such a life extending concept we'd be fine. Because, in fact, unless the adults of our community, as is the case of white adults in their community, and others, insure or maintain their dominant positions, regardless of abilities, (but based on skin color priviledge) ( which explains the 4% figure), have the mendacity to understand the idea behind 'vested interest' and all of its ramifications, we, our folks, to a large extent, would be farther along.
 To comment even more here,
To comment even more here, in Harlem, the youth have an unemployment rate of 70% or greater. For men it hovers around 50%. And they see who are doing the work here that they can do themselves. It's maddening. So to see these hypocritical people now go to Iraq and start a 'jobs' program for the young people there is a bit much for me. and them. (Obviously, we can see their motivation for doing so in a "real" sense) And it seems a bit ridiculous to our young people, also, if the data are to be believed. Truly Sickening! Oh wait. The politicians, of which, these young folks still have faith in, according to the data, of the CBC now have power based on the last elections. Lets see what happens to help ameliorate their circumstances. I'd love for my tax dollars to be spent accordingly!
