Artrell Dickerson, a victim of police brutality
A young man named Artrell Dickerson was killed by a Detroit police officer this Monday while he was attending a friends funeral. The Dickerson family released a statement describing the incident,
“Monday afternoon a crowd of people were gathered outside of Cantrell’s funeral home after the emotional and somewhat disruptive funeral of a young man who was killed February 5th outside a bar on 8 mile in Detroit. The police arrive after having been called to calm the unrest. In the midst of the excitement a young man is killed. He is shot once in the back by a single officer as he runs away from the scene. When he is down he is shot as many as five more times. This young man was Artrell Dickerson. These are the facts.” (read entire “Statement on behalf of Dickerson family” here).

Does anyone know if there's a website somewhere that specializes in tracking and documenting these police murders?
P6 I ain't trying to throw no more work your way, you're already doing a heroic job keeping us informed and enlightened, but it would be very useful to collect and display these cases on one website. Entries could be limited to incidents that occurred after 2000. That would keep the data current and make the project more managable. Everyone could be asked to contribute by reporting on events they learn about in their communities.
The true dimensions of this problem remain mostly inferential. That needs to change. A roster of faces, names, and dates could help to humanize these victims and make folks more aware of the frequency of these brutal and illegal public executions.
Just a thought. I'd be willing to contribute.

I don't think the information is available the way you want it...there are local organizations that do it locally.
I'd have no problem hosting such a project...web site, necessary databases, a couple of email addresses and ftp passwords. Can talk with folks about what you need to do what you want here. I can't take the lead on design and data entry, though.
I'm no web page designer.
I'm no web page designer. But I can do searches to help identify these cases and link to news stories and photos of victims.Â
I found this page hosted on AOL Black Voices. It's well designed, but not very comprehensive. It contains twelve (12)"high profile" cases that span the last two decades, and includes beatings as well as killings. It is a good example of what I think is needed.Â
Gotcha. First things first
Gotcha. First things first though. I have to finish what I'm working on now.
Give me a week or so...it will NOT be done, but if I don't get back to you by then, hit me with a reminder by email.Â
No prob. In the meantime
No prob. In the meantime I'll do some detective work on the web.

BTW, I am mindful of the fact that the number of unjustifiable police killings pales in comparision with the number of people murdered everyday in our communities. Perhaps there should be a roster for the countless innocent victims of such violence. They deserve recognition too, and the problem should not be ignored. But that's a job for someone else. My interest for the moment is on the police state and the state of policing in black communities. Is the occupation increasing the violence? What would happen if the police were redeployed? What will it take before they will admit they've lost the war on drugs?
