All respect and no restraint

Watch me NOT discuss Sen. Obama

I really hope Sen. Obama hangs in there...it's, like, feeding me here. Somewhere in the comments I noted all this noise says more about the electorate than Obama himself.

Not everyone is handling it well, though.

I felt bad for state Sen. Robert Ford...it's obvious that nothing in his personal experience as a politician in South Carolina prepared him for being forced to choose between supporting a Black man and a white woman...that's what short-circuited his mind.

"If I caused anybody — including myself — any pain about the comments I made earlier, then I want to apologize to myself and to Senator Obama and any of his supporters"

It cracked me up...but he'll recover. Anyone who counts to him probably understands.

If anyone is listening, I have a request, though.

Black Like Me?
Those Asking if Barack Obama Is 'Black Enough' Are Asking the Wrong Question
By Marjorie Valbrun
Friday, February 16, 2007; A23

What does it mean to be black, and who is the arbiter of authentic blackness? As Sen. Barack Obama's "blackness" has increasingly been discussed on black-oriented radio shows, at political conferences and on Sunday morning news shows, I've grown more dismayed by the day.

The discourse, occurring mostly among black people, has been dominated by questions about Obama's being biracial, his immigrant father and his suitability as a presidential candidate, given that his life story doesn't parallel that of most blacks born in the United States. Some have implied that only a black candidate whose ancestors were slaves here or who have themselves experienced the trauma of this country's racial history can truly understand what it means to be black in America and represent the political interests of black Americans.

Can we keep our issues straight? THAT discourse is being held in the media.

The REAL point of this op-ed comes out early

As a black immigrant and a Haitian-American who has lived in the country for 37 years, I know how it feels to have my blackness challenged by native-born blacks.

And it's a worthy topic. More than worthy; it's a discussion that's as important to Black folk as the one with white folks. I don't even dispute the conclusions that were reached.

It makes me angry. I'm angry for Obama, too. People are asking whether he's black enough to represent them. I ask, black enough by whose standards? Why must Obama's life follow the same track of "authentic" black folk to pass this litmus test?

But do you really have to shoehorn it into the bullshit discussion of a position held by three Black people? Everyone else that seriously questions how many drops of Negro blood he has is a Republican pundit.

The junior senator from Illinois

Hi Earl,

He's black enough for me ;o)

On a serious note, I can say that while I know that Senator Obama received a priceless assist from the Chicago Tribune during the primaries that destroyed a couple of centimillionaire candidates, one of whom was in synch with my politics, from my experience, at least his staff is professional, which was more than I could say for Hastert. Obama also seems like he might read a book now and again and form his own opinion on an issue occasionally without first putting his finger in the air. A useful element of unpredictability.

I'd still disagree with Obama on most issues and I couldn't see myself voting for him unless he's being opposed by a true wingnut, but I'd prefer him being the Democratic nominee to Hillary. Obama doesn't have her weird, authoritarian, psychological, Boomer generation baggage.

I'll remember that when I

I'll remember that when I discuss Sen. Obama. Wink

Heh

Heh

Let's be clear, Hillary

Let's be clear, Hillary Clinton bought at least one of those South Carolina Kneegrows. The other one is prolly lookin' fo his check in the mail.

It's a sign of things to come during this election campaign. She has plenty of cash on hand and, let's be real, plenty of niggas willing to sell their asses and sell out their communities. Nothing new about that. The question is: will Obama pay to play? Since I won't be voting for either one of dem bitches, regardless of who gets the nomination, I just view the whole thing as spectacle.

I still can't get over a 24

I still can't get over a 24 month presidential campaign. It's ridiculous...and mostly because states are pushing their primaries up, trying to have impact on the nomination.

I think they should go to a national, mail-in primary. Get that shit over with all at once.

"Get that shit over with all

"Get that shit over with all at once."

Hey ... don't cancel the circus ... the clowns are just starting to warm up.

But do you really have to

But do you really have to shoehorn it into the bullshit discussion of a position held by three Black people? Everyone else that seriously questions how many drops of Negro blood he has is a Republican pundit.

Those Republican/conservative pundits and would-be activists also questioned Obama's church affiliation and doctrine.  Somehow, the mission of Obama's church, his wife and his overall choice and commitment to the black community and to be "black" escaped all the playa haters in blackface or those with actual black faces only a mother could love (re: Crouch).

Obama was clear about where he is  comfortable and rooted -- i.e. in the African American community.  Now, how much more "black" does he need to get?

Nothing new. The same

Nothing new. The same techniques are used in Corporate America. I'm still working out whether the government is an extension of Corporate America or vice versa. I'm leaning toward the former lately.

Nquest - Great Point

It seems to me that it would be difficult for any politician to spend too much time next to Jeremiah Wright and still be a buster...but, I've been arguing that for a while...If folks won't read the first book, they'll just have to wait - and it should be from the vantage point of organizations with members, capital and resources to leverage in a long-term political fight...the sidelines won't be the right place to evaluate this dude. It may be the place to generate volume, but not to generate results.

When I saw BO on 60 Minutes, it occurred to me that when the "blacker than thou" question came from the white commentator, he should have really flipped that question around - and noted the novelty of mainstream media ever listening to that constituency - and asking them about applying that standard to white Democrats who seek the black vote...but, more importantly, to asking that same white reporter to FLESH OUT the dimensions of political blackness.  What were these "critics" saying?  Were they empirically correct in looking for new policy and action around certain issues?  What were those issues?  And if this wasn't about issues, and about something else - like style...then he should call it that...

Another bullshit issue where terms need to be redefined.  The game is always on.

Thanks for those links.  I read that weak-ass conservative chick talking about her fears while at Trinity.  Well then, getcha pale ass up and out and head the phuk West like airbody else in CHI.  As if...

I'm still looking for that tramp...

I read that weak-ass con-chick talking about her fears while at Trinity.

I'm still looking for the trampoline.  She did some hellafied somersaults and high dives with all that (Affirmative Action!!!) jumping to conclusions she did.  Typical fear mongering antics masqueraded as anxious (and supposedly founded) concerns.  I guess that's all they got.

Penalties ought to be imposed for such interloping, though, and a lifetime supply of Drop Squads are in order for momma's ugly (and conveniently) ultra-black sons and daughter.  I thought my girl was trying to put an end to "blackness."  But, as far as momma's ugly duckling:

Funny how the *tribalisms* turns.

At least he's consistent:

"What Obama isn't: black like me."     - AND -    "It is far more important for us to recognize what I call the American humanity [instead of a blindfolded black unity]."

Somewhat.

Jack Ryan did himself in

When he allied himself with the holier-than-thou portion of the Illinois GOP. If he had been with the Jim Edgar, Judy Baar Topinka wing of the Illinois GOP, then I think it would have been ok. He could have weathered the storm. But, when your political patrons are the Holy Roller, Bible Thumping Crowd, and you come up with sex party talk in your divorce......that's a big no no.

About Trinity....

It was absolutely ridiculous. First, they tried to say that the man was a Muslim Plant....

When that was proven to be a LIE...

Now, the church he goes to is suspect.

Jeremiah Wright is NO T.D. Jakes. Period.

It was ridiculous to hear that woman on WVON. I was so happy that it was Roland Martin's show. Not that the other hosts couldn't have handled it, but Santita Jackson would have tried to be too conciliatory, Cliff Kelley would have been too harsh, and John Day - well, he would have made the woman cry. No, Roland was the host, not only because he could tell her off in no uncertain terms, but because Roland comes from a Black Evangelical perspective, and he checked her on the religious side. It was definitely enjoyable when the new pastor of Trinity called in and made her show her face.

Another poster on another MB had it right: Trinity's 12 points are like out of the 'Conservative' handbook. They are everything THEY SAY should be happening in America. It's what they say when they wag their fingers at the Black Community, like THEY (the GOP) invented self-help and self-reliance. Whatever.

But, when they come across a group of Christians, who practice it...suddenly, something's wrong with it.

 Uh huh.

Uh huh.

Yeah, Lotta Backtracking

I followed up offline and there was more backtracking about not being an expert, yada yada yada...mind ya phukkin' binis, then. Airbody want Black folk to be humanists and blah blah blah...ok...after you. After the germans and the brits and the chinese and the texans and the floridians and californians all give up all their "rights" and prerogatives and identity and all that other shit...then, maybe we'll consider it...

That just proves that it's not about...

That just proves that it's not about "personal responsibility."  It's all about absolving white America of any (of their) responsibility.  That's the obvious constant when they contradict themselves like that.  The interloping white female was quick to try to associate not "personal" or social responsibility with Trinity but the quota coded, much maligned affirmative action & co.

Like I said, it's all about absolving whites of any of their responsibility.  Hell, they can't even be responsible enough to keep their own sh%t -- talking points -- straight.
