Coincidence?

Remember this

Cortez said this week that former private Steven D. Green raped the girl before he did. Then Green shot her father, mother and sister before shooting the teen in the head, Cortez said.

He also testified that the soldiers tried to burn the girl's body. They burned their own clothes and threw the murder weapon, an AK-47, into a canal in an effort to dispose of the evidence.

and this

Mr Green's involvement has raised questions about the army's recruiting procedures in an increasingly unpopular war that has killed nearly 3,000 US troops.

He entered the army soon after being arrested for underage drinking, and had a record of alcohol and drug abuse.

To make up for a recruitment shortfall, the army has begun accepting a higher number of "category four" candidates who score low on a military aptitude test.

when you read this.

Little more on LaVena's death was said until St. Louis CBS affiliate KMOV aired a story last night which disclosed troubling details not previously made public - details which belie the Army's assertion that the young Florissant native died by her own hand. The video of the report is available on the KMOV website.

Reporter Matt Sczesny spoke with LaVena's father and examined documents and photos sent by Army investigators. So far from supporting the claim that LaVena died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the documents provided elements of another scenario altogether:

  • Indications of physical abuse that went unremarked by the autopsy
  • The absence of psychological indicators of suicidal thoughts; indeed, testimony that LaVena was happy and healthy prior to her death
  • Indications, via residue tests, that LaVena may not even have handled the weapon that killed her
  • A blood trail outside the tent where Lavena's body was found
  • Indications that someone attenpted to set LaVena's body on fire

The Army has resisted calls by Dr. Johnson and by KMOV to reopen its investigation.

The Death of LaVena Johnson

"A promise by the office of Representative William Lacy Clay to look into the matter produced nothing."

Who dropped the ball in William Clay's office? Having worked for and managed the offices of elected officials I don't see why an inquiry from the Representative of Missouri's First District who constantly speaks out against the War in Iraq went nowhere? Why weren't the resources of his office used to bring this matter to greater public attention? Maybe Clay's office did nothing wrong but I want to know what his staff did to help this family.

Forget military intelligence, military leadership is an oxymoron

This week I read the NEWSWEEK cover story about how we fail our War on Terror vets, how our vets are homeless and the debacle at Walter Reed hospital.  Its the military way to hide scandal and incompetance

forget about reps...,

as a practical matter in Misery, if you actually want representative attention and response from an elected official, you go to/through the office of Senator Kit Bond. Interestingly, I found the same to be true in Kansas.

Going through a democratic state rep was/is a complete waste of time, but Bob Dole, Pat Robertson, and Sam Brownback's staffs actually took the time to become conversant with constituent issues, and, help you if it was warranted...,

Representation and Leadership

"Going through a democratic state rep was/is a complete waste of time...

True, but William Lacy Clay, Jr. is a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. His father William Lacy Clay, Sr. held the same seat from 1969 to 2001.

From where I'm sitting it doesn't look as if Ms. Johnson's parents are getting representation or leadership from Clay fils.
