Former House speaker Newt Gingrich was having an extramarital affair even as he led the charge against President Bill Clinton over the Monica S. Lewinsky affair, he acknowledged in an interview with a conservative Christian group.
"The honest answer is 'Yes,' " Gingrich, a potential 2008 Republican presidential candidate, said in an interview with Focus on the Family founder James C. Dobson to be aired today, according to a transcript. "There are times that I have fallen short of my own standards. There's certainly times when I've fallen short of God's standards."
Gingrich asserted in the interview, however, that he should not be viewed as a hypocrite for pursuing Clinton's infidelity.
He declared: "I drew a line in my mind that said, 'Even though I run the risk of being deeply embarrassed, and even though at a purely personal level I am not rendering judgment on another human being, as a leader of the government trying to uphold the rule of law, I have no choice except to move forward and say that you cannot accept . . . perjury in your highest officials.'

Newt's explanation for his behavior reminds me of a story that a dear and close old friend once told me about his late mother. He had gone to visit her for Christmas and after a few days there she put him out of her house in the dead of winter and it was quite cold where she lived. His mother was angry at him because she had found out that he had been physically intimate with a friend of hers. My friend said that he could understand his mother being angry at him but she had been having a long term affair with her friend's husband at the same time.
