Grand Jury in Bell Case Hears From New Witness
By AL BAKER
A grand jury in Queens that is weighing evidence in the police shooting of Sean Bell interrupted its deliberations today to hear from a new witness, a law enforcement official said.
The witness testified for less than an hour, the official said, and the grand jury has gone back to deliberating.
On Wednesday, the first day of deliberations, the panel did not vote on whether to hand up indictments in the case.
The panel of 23 grand jurors, which has been meeting as often as three times a week since Jan. 22 in an office building in Queens, will determine whether any of the five officers who fired a total of 50 bullets into Mr. Bell’s gray Nissan Altima on Nov. 25 will face criminal charges. Mr. Bell was killed and two of his friends were injured.
The panel could vote to indict some or all of the officers on a range of charges or decline to indict any of them.
Michael J. Palladino, the president of the Detectives’ Endowment Association, said he had been told that the new witness testified today.
"I am hearing he went in and he was in there about an hour or so, and he left the location," Mr. Palladino said. "And I believe they are deliberating again.”
He added: "I don’t know what he said. I don’t know what impact it ultimately will have on the grand jurors, but it was imperative that he go before the grand jury and explain to them the information that he has."
