John McWhorter slanders the Black communities

Great Society Begets Bad Society
BY JOHN McWHORTER

***sigh***

Who asks for this shit? Who pays for this shit?

On "60 Minutes" last Sunday, rapper Cam'ron told Anderson Cooper that he would not inform the police if a serial killer were living next door to him, as it would alienate his fan base.

His fan base is white.

The "stop snitching" Zeitgeist has become a shibboleth of being "down with" your people in poor black neighborhoods and refusing to give the police information about a black-on-black homicide, even if you witnessed it.

This is a lie. That's okay, I've come to expect it of him.

The Black community didn't talk to cops for the same reasons Palestinians don't talk to patrolling Israeli troops. They knew the cops/occupying force wouldn't be around to protect them from the bad guys. Don't forget, we're forty years from Jim Crow, which shaped white folks' behavior even more surely than Black folks'. That's what that was all about.

You want a "no snitching" vibe, try Chinatown.

Using this technique as a means to stop racism is as misguided as it is easy. Police brutality was much worse in the past, and the war on drugs is old news.

"Was much worse," huh? Old news?

John McWhorter doesn't know any Black people. Probably not even himself.

The current "stop snitching" notion is, quite simply, a subcultural fashion of the moment.

Just for Black folks, or for the cops too?

It is also a facet of a larger phenomenon: a sense among black teens and 20-somethings that being aggressive toward the opposition is the soul of being authentic. There has been this element in the black community since the 1960s, but these days, it is so deeply felt that it is tacitly approved to place anti-authoritarian sentiment over saving black lives.

Okay, now that people know Black folks actually think about their own situation in ways totally alien to the media figures who describe us...thank you Don Imus...let me say this and maybe it will be understood.

We don't think about how to be Black. Pundits do that shit. People natter on and on about "blackness" and Black folks just go on living their lives as best they can. This "soul of being authentic" is bullshit, and the only reason it has any traction is that the mainstream is totally lost as to how to deal with free folks in their midst. They are desperately casting about for a nice predictable bucket we can dumped into.

We have been trying to address the poisons poured into our communities, and were ignored to the degree that the people who reflexively attack the Reverends Jackson and Sharpton wound up strengthening both mens hands by demanding to see what THEY demanded YOU see for years.

So now do we have to list all the community organizations that met with police seeking protection? Do we have to document all the things that give cause to suspect the police see ALL the members of the community as a problem? Do we have to explain that since we see very clearly who is the criminal element we do not accept that YOU can't tell US from THEM?

Fuck that.

No blackness again. Hmm. I

No blackness again. Hmm. I think we agree that black culture is transparent. But why not just compare Camron to badboy rockers?

I don't care

McWhorter slimes and slanders Black folks every time he puts pen to paper.

We can discuss cultural parallelisms another time.

Actually, why not compate

Cam'ron to gun toting folks who routinely eschew the intervention of law enforcement like La Cosa Nostra and your militia types...that way you could his silly ass whether or not he and his gun toting homeboys would bust a cap in the killer's ass or if they would bitch up like a bunch of "artists" and watch him kill and read about it in the papers like helpless grandmothers and little boys and girls would be forced to do. Fuck McWhorter. He is a whore and mediocre intellect of the worst kind. Straight byatch! And fuck Whitlock too.

Excuse my Baldwin.  I get's like that sometimes.  Nuff respect.

So True, So True

We don't think about how to be Black. Pundits do that shit. People natter on and on about "blackness" and Black folks just go on living their lives as best they can. This "soul of being authentic" is bullshit, and the only reason it has any traction is that the mainstream is totally lost as to how to deal with free folks in their midst. They are desperately casting about for a nice predictable bucket we can dumped into.

Thank you, my brother, thank you! How long, how long will this bullshit go on?

To be honest, this issue sprang up in the late 1960s and has continued in one form or another to this day. So-called black radicals allowed themselves to be sucked into this maw and we have been trying to extricate ourselves from this conceptual trap for nearly 40 years.

It's not about a comparison

He didn't compare Cam'ron to any criminal type. He didn't compare Cam'ron at all. He identified the Black communities with Cam'ron when we all know tha audience for Cam'ron's antics are the children of the people he writes for,

Snitchin'

I saw part of that absurd interview with Cam'ron and I thought he was an absolute fool to go on national television and say, for example, that he would not turn in a serial killer. At the time I thought who was this knucklehead's agent or publicist and why did they let him do this interview.

In any case, it has been pointed out to me since then that the police never snitch on each and neither do the Marines. (Look at the killings in Hiditha.)

I feel you...

My beef with McWhorter wasn't about the comparison. I agree with you that it's secondary. What matters is that the article is being written, framed and distributed in the manner it is. Padding the coffers. I think one of the posters at the Sun said it best, the stop snitching ethos reaches to the highest levels of government. If you look at the government as just another "crew," then loyalty must the only thing that matters BECAUSE everyone is playing a dirty game...so you stick with your side, right or wrong. How is that any different than Republicans supporting a war that kills 650,000 people on bullshit? It's as if Americans are saying, "I don't live next door to a serial killer, but I voted for a mass murderer! Damn proud!" Sounds to me like everyone has lost their minds - and you'd think McWhorter and Whitlock would get tired of the "Nullify the Niggahs Duty." Black Morality Alert...Code Red. Call John and Jason, stat!

Amen PT

these collectives of folks with guns recognize that the rules of law are for citizens or non-soldier types without the means to live above the law. The law is not for everyone. Loyalty, loyalty, loyalty. That's the main thing - and only the crew on top talks about ethics because they can use the greatest degree of force without looking bad. Americans weren't anti-terror when they paying taxes to the British. They were anti-traitor and that's why every child knows the name Benedict Arnold. Hypocritical muhphukkas - and Cam'ron needs hep. No "l".

Where does 'stop snitching'

This comment has been moved here.

It's about Stop Lying, not Stop Snitching

...therefore I moved your question to today's open thread.

I think McWhorter should stop lying about Black people.

Did you follow those links? He wrote one op-ed claiming he was at a Harlem Week event, complaining about how he was received...but he didn't make it. He wrote the complaint before the event.

He wrote a screed about the Watts riot last year, saying Black people 'even broke the windows of the Black-owned stores that hung signs reading "Soul Brother"'. But that was white cops, in Newark.

He's a scholar. He knows he's a liar.

My Crew Right or Wrong

If you look at the government as just another "crew," then loyalty must the only thing that matters BECAUSE everyone is playing a dirty game...so you stick with your side, right or wrong.

Yes indeedy! I wish I could recall verbatim Jack Nicholson's line at the beginning of the movie The Departed when he asks  what is the difference between a criminal or a cop pointing a gun at you. His character's point was that there was no difference.

A Phrase Worth Repeating Over and Over Again

and you'd think McWhorter and Whitlock would get tired of the "Nullify the Niggahs Duty."

I don't who I am scared of more

White America, the cops, the ghetto jerkoffs or the Black American Elite thought Police. The Imus fiasco has emboldned these people and made a bad situation into a total Black Elite Circle Jerk with people like Crouch, McWhorter, Whitlock, Ridley using this to butress their standing as HNIC to go to for a contrary opinion . And the Black Female establishment has not been any better trying to tie anything Black Males do as sexist, homophobic violent and angry white males trying to deflect blame for what Imus said along with Jesse AND Al for creating a culture that made it possible for people Like Imus, Limbaugh, Grant and Savage to make millions for their companies.

The Black Thought Police is the greatest threat to Black America's future because they are intellectually dishonest, morally corrupt and have not spent any time in majortiy black neighborhoods and want to claim the moral mantle of King, Malcolm and other Black Intellectual giants who put in the work and time. I remember watching an old debate with Malcolm on a show and he was asked about a survey on Black Leadership and who they considered "Black Leaders" Malcolm said white people think the only black people who matter and thereby worthy of being leaders leaders are athletes, entertainers and black conservatives. These are the people whom whites choose as leaders,

Jason Whitlock (sportswriter)

Oprah Winfrey (talk show host)

Stanley Crouch (music critic)

John McWhorter ( Linquist a shoody one at that)

Bill Cosby ( Comedian)

Halle Berry (actress)

rappers

Thomas Sowell ( the worst so- called intellectual in America)

There are no Harold Cruses, Julianne Malveaux, Kimberele Lewis Crenshaw, John Henrik Clarkes amongst these people, not even first tier social critics like Ishamel Reed, Norman Kelly , Greg Tate and or Joan Morgan. These people like Mc Whorter are clowns and whites know this because they will never invite a black person with a nuaced argument because it might make both Blacks and Whites think. Mc Whorter tried to challenge Reed to a debate and said "he would wipe the floor with Reed until he said yes and then canceled saying he "had a family engagment, that's balls for ya.

Julianne Malveaux

I agree with your sentiments but speaking personally I give thanks that Dr. Malevolent is not placed in the first tier and black folks will regret the day that she ever is placed in this category. What a fraud!

Johnny goes to Chinatown!

It's funny that you mention Chinatown. Johnny mentioned Chinatown when he was on-duty at a poverty conference regarding Katrina, last fall I guess. He was on this Great Society kick there too. It doesn't matter to Johnny how many times he's debunked but the insteresting this is he tried to play that Model Minority bs when referencing Chinatown. He forgot to mention their stop snitching culture, Triad version.

Besides that, he talked about welfare, of course. Nevermind how black poverty drastically decrease during the time he blames welfare for damaging black culture (in the inner-city or among poor blacks).

The amazing thing he said was that "no people could have resisted" the lure of the seductive welfare policies. Absent from his talk were comments about how welfare damaged (poor) white culture or anybody else's, including Asian American populations who, with high levels of poverty, don't fit the myth projections. (See census data on Cambodians, the Hmong, Laotians, and the Vietnamese.)

No one could resist it but, apparently, from his talk, only poor black culture was damaged by welfare and it's that seductive lure of welfare that explains black poverty.

newsoulus...great post

apples and oranges + mediocrity = recipe for disaster.

Dead on in NQuest. Remember

Dead on in NQuest. Remember the Model Minority Myth . Everyone should resist the Welfare State.

Seductive Welfare Policies

The amazing thing he said was that "no people could have resisted" the lure of the seductive welfare policies.

The overwhelming majority of black people must have resisted this so-called lure because they weren't on welfare.

DuBois on the Police

from Dusk of Dawn (1940)

These districts are not usually protected by the police -- rather victimized and tyrannized over by them. No one who does not know can realize what tyranny a low-grade white policeman can exercise in a colored neighborhood. In court his unsupported word cannot be disputed and the only defense against him is often mayhem and assassination by black criminals, with resultant hue and cry.
