Wolfowitz Said to Push for Deal to Quit

Wolfowitz began Wednesday to negotiate the terms under which he would resign, in return for the dropping or softening of the charge that he had engaged in misconduct, bank officials said.
Mr. Wolfowitz was said to be adamant that he be cleared of wrongdoing before he resigned, according to people familiar with his thinking.
Did he screw up? Obviously. But that doesn't matter. What matters is if official note of the fact is made.
It's like everything happened in a little pocket universe. It's like a physical Möbius point. It's...semantic alchemy.
And it doesn't even matter. Wolfowitz is of that class of American Brahmins that can't fall below their socioeconomic class no matter how badly they fuck up. The American Brahmin class is pretty large. Everyone with a golden parachute is in there...and I think getting the Medal of Freedom for fucking up Iraq not only qualifies you for membership, it damn near qualifies you for worship.
Wolfowitz has the personal economic resources to chill as long as he'd like, and WILL be re-employed at an annual salary of $X * 105 when he wants. On the real, the worst this can do to him is set (X < 5) && (X > 2.5).

What Goes Around Comes Around
Wolfowitz's defense that the bank's board forced him to handle the compensation issues regarding his main squeeze because they were afraid to deal with her is pitiful. If what he says is true, then why didn't he ask the board to appoint a panel of compensation experts from outside the bank and let them present a set of recommendations to the HR department and the bank's personnel committee for approval?
In the parlance employed in the neighborhood of my youth, Wolfowitz got caught with his drawers down and somebody slapped him on his ass. He should have gotten his hat several weeks ago and moved on. The man has no sense of grace.

P6 is absolutely right about the ability of guys like Wolfowitz to maintain their socioeconomic status no matter how badly they make a muck of things. If any of us who post on this site screwed up as badly and to the extent that Wolfowitz and his cut buddies in the neo-con camp have done we would be living in a homeless shelter or back at the home front if our parents were still living.
The desire of Wolfowitz, Gonzalez, et al. to hold onto the reins and perquisites of power long after they have undermined their own authority troubles me. These folks are so convinced of the rightousness of their causes and our nearly imbecilic inability to appreciate their grandiose designs and plans that I truly fear for what little democratic rights remain in this Republic.
We are not far from a coup attempt.
