All respect and no restraint

Michael Powell sucks Giuliani off in the New York Times

His daddy might be a soldier but HE is a neocon Republican sellout.

More than any other Republican running for president, Mr. Giuliani has confronted the question of race, that most torturous of American legacies.

His 1993 mayoral campaign slogan, often repeated, of “one city, one standard,” emphasized his view that no ethnic or racial group should expect special treatment. And he spoke with a stunning bluntness about what he saw as the failings of the city’s black leadership.

Oh, and this.

Mr. Giuliani asserts that black people are not mysterious to him, even if they find him a puzzle.

“In the case of the African-American community, I understand it really well,” he told a black editorial writer at The Daily News in 1999. “There’s no point trying to educate people that I’m not a racist any more than I’m not a criminal.”

If people can’t figure me out, he added, “that’s their problem.”

The problem is, we DID figure him out. And after Bernie Kerik, leading drunken policemen on a obscenity-laced tirade, and taking credit for changed made by David Dinkins, if white folks can't figure him out, that's fine. We'll just hit bottom that much faster and be forced to change that much sooner.

Michael Powell

I have wondering when a prominent black supporter of Guiliani would emerge. I'm glad that it is Michael Powell because it only serves to reinforce my perspective on how Rudy G. actually regards black people as opposed to the claims of he and his supporters like Michael Powell.

If my memory serves me correctly, Br. Rudy did not meet even once with any black elected official of New York City during his two terms as mayor. This tells me all I need to know about Guiliani and Michael Powell.

He bragged about not

He bragged about not meeting with Black folks.

If he had really treated everyone in the city the same, white folks would have been furious.

And remember, this is the clown that wanted to cancel NYC's election and extend his term as mayor because of 9/11.

Endorsements such as this

Endorsements such as this are designed to appeal to white moderates.  I don't think anyone seriously believes that Giuliani intends to use this endorsement to make inroads into the African American community.

I'm pretty convinced it's

I'm pretty convinced it's an attempt to counter the article in the August Harpers magazine. It covers the same time territory and is far more accurate, and hence damning.

"He bragged about not

"He bragged about not meeting with Black folks."

I still find it interesting that when white southern politicians during the late 1950s and early to mid-1960s made such claims they were quickly condemned by the northern press. When northern white politicians like Rudy Guiliani, however, made similar boasts they were given a free pass. Rudy Guiliani is absolutely unfit to be president of the United States.

See Crazy for Rudy by Michael Woolf, June 2007 issue of Vanity Fair.
