Man Charged in Newark Deaths Pleads Not Guilty

NEWARK, Aug. 10 — A third suspect, identified as a teenager, has been arrested in the execution-style slayings of three students here Saturday night, the authorities said.

The two others charged so far are a 28-year-old construction worker and a 15 year old.

The construction worker, Jose Carranza, is an illegal immigrant from Peru who now also faces an order of detention against him by federal authorities, his lawyer and judicial officials said today.

Mr. Carranza pleaded not guilty to the murder and other charges at an arraignment this morning where family members of the victims, Mayor Cory A. Booker, the Essex County Sheriff and Prosecutor, and his own mother and brother packed the courtroom.

Speaking inaudibly in Spanish, his brief answers translated for Judge Michael Casale of Essex County Superior Court, Mr. Carranza said he does not have a Social Security number and waived his right, as a Peruvian national, to have a consular official notified.

Mr. Carranza, who lives in Orange, had been out on $150,000 bail pending trial on two separate indictments: sexual assault on a young girl in his care over four years when she was 5 to 9; and aggravated assault stemming from a bar fight last year. He turned himself in to Mayor Booker personally Thursday, about 12 hours after a 15-year-old, who is not being identified because he is a juvenile, was arrested on the same charges.

The authorities said today that Mr. Carranza, who is being held on $1 million bond, had surrendered his passport at an earlier court appearance on the other charges, and that he was subject to a “detainer” by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He wore an orange jumpsuit and was handcuffed during the brief hearing.
