When I was in elementary school, I was actually taught how colonialism proceeded. First came the Christian missionaries, then the merchants, then the soldiers. We were also taught the economic sphere of influence concept. This is the favored method of conquest nowadays...Coca Cola tends to be the first in, leading with water purification project and the missionaries follow the soldiers.
We got no information about how to reacquire a previously released colony. Seems there's no way to do it but to kill a loooot of people.
