Washington Post:
A Death in Southeast
Many questions remain to be answered.
Thursday, September 20, 2007; Page A20A14-YEAR-OLD boy is shot to death by an off-duty D.C. police officer. The gun that the boy was alleged to have fired at the officer is missing. So, too, is the minibike that led the officer to pursue the boy. Questions, doubts and suspicions abound in the aftermath of this week's tragedy -- so city officials are right to call in federal authorities to lead the investigation.
Okay...
It's important not to prejudge the case until all the circumstances are known. Few people are exposed to the dangers that come with being a police officer.
Do they read their own newspaper ?
Authorities have said the officers -- identified yesterday as James Haskel and Anthony Clay -- were riding in Haskel's sport-utility vehicle and looking for a minibike stolen from Haskel's home when they found DeOnté astride it. Haskel, 44, a 22-year member of the force who works in the helicopter unit, was the only officer to shoot, police said. Clay, 43, did not draw his weapon, officials said. Clay is a 19-year member of the force assigned to the training academy, where he produces instructional videos.
Okay?
Consider the possibility that treating folks like they have some intelligence is a better way of keeping the peace.
Might require some thought. You might have to remember what happened when you tried something and failed so you can try something different. But once you get used to it, it's pretty easy.
