Baisden issues part of an apology to Color of Change

I'd love to see that letter he claims to have. I'd like to see who it says they want to collect "monies on their behalf." And we still don't know what Mr. Baisden did with the monies he collected.

He had the correct information before he went on the air.

ColorOfChange.org has explained the distribution of Jena 6 legal defense funds repeatedly, both in written communication and verbally, to Michael Baisden's staff, particularly addressing Mr. Jones' concerns. In fact, Mr. Baisden's staff obtained Mr. Jones' signature on the letter authorizing release of funds to Louis Scott, and followed up with the other young men's attorneys to confirm that they had received their funds from us. His team knows that we have distributed money to the young men's legal teams.

So I'm not feeling it, personally. Especially since I doubt that online apology will reach everyone his radio show does. The apology should be on the air, and he should be as transparent about where the monies he collected went.

Anyway, the fractional apology goes like this:

Response to Color of Change

The Michael Baisden show and staff were given inaccurate information regarding donations made by the public and David Bowie. We apologize to our listeners and to ColorofChange for not seeking more reliable sources. According to documentation provided by the organization through their web site, all the funds collected by ColorofChange have been distributed to the families as promised.

We do, however, respect the right of four of the Jena 6 families who have insisted that ColorofChange discontinue collection of any monies on their behalf. But this should not reflect on the integrity of this organization which has collected and distributed over $200,000 to their legal defense.

Any insinuations that were made about me wanting to be the sole fundraiser for legal defense is ridiculous. I am too tired after my radio gig to take on that responsibility, and furthermore, it is impossible. No one man or organization can fund the movement of an entire nation.

I am relieved to have put this behind us so that both our organizations can get back to the business of helping people. There is nothing wrong with having disagreements, as long as you love the people enough to work it out, sooner rather than later.

Thanks again for your support of the many organizations that are doing an outstanding job of raising money to help those who desperately need it. We’ve got a long way to go family and we won’t get there unless we work together. Divided we fall!

Let's see if he'll do it ON AIR

And, let him open up the books on the money HE collected.

See the emotional move he

See the emotional move he makes?

This isn't a disagreement but something else entirely. Using the idea of family and emotional ties allows him to skirt this.

Now I am not

The Falseness of Baisden's Apology

Spence is correct. Baisden can't make the kind of statements that he made about Color of Change and then attempt to get some slide action by throwing up the word "love" as if he and Color of Change were involved in a family dispute. Too many Black folks, especially black men, have taken to tossing this word and all that it implies around as if it were a magic oath that could dispel any amount of hurt, pain or damage that has been caused. When Jesus spoke of forgiveness he was referring to the simple every day trespasses that occur between human beings as we go about our business. When someone publicly accuses one of stealing from poor and incarcerated people and that person knows the truth to be different he can't appeal to the tenets of "love" or claim that there was a disagreement based on a misunderstanding.

The Falseness of Baisden's Apology

The other families should have been invited on Baisden's show to speak just like Marcus Jones, what I found troubling through all of this is that for all of Al Sharpton's supposed "help" he did not secure  one interview for the families in the national media.  They allowed the media to portray this as a "BLACK PEOPLE'S ISSUE" instead of what it is: a "JUSTICE SYSTEM ISSUE".  I did not see any of the family members on the Today show, Good Morn AM etc....... why??  Amy Goodman spoke to Marcus Jones, Caspepla Bailey and one other of the boys mothers on her show and at the time it was stated that they were receiving NO HELP AT ALL from the NAACP or anyone else of so called prominance.

As a member of Color of Change I am appalled the Baisden used his radio show to cause division between everyone involved:  SHAME ON YOU MICHAEL BAISDEN!!

Yeah, there's going to be

Yeah, there's going to be some collateral damage with this one.

they should sue.    Lester
