 Ideologies of Blackness - that is too rich....putting Steele and blackness in the same sentence. It's a wonder that the computer didn't explode while typing it.

 He is a model of blacks' possibilities when they are emancipated from ideologies of blackness, particularly those that, Steele says, "focus on self-respect apart from achievement."

Who the hell is Steele talking about? How about every other SUCCESSFUL Black person out here? Who the hell does Shelby Steele believes raised us?

I try to picture Will making an equivalent statement about "white's possibilities" in Apalachia.

What, pray tell, are ideologies of blackness? Steele and his half-baked white allies write and talk as if black achievement, self-respect and respect for others were not for many generations long cherised values among black Americans; affluent and poor, learned and unread. We were human beings in the fullest sense of that term long before President Johnson signed the 1964 Civil Rights Bill.
