In addition to being "emancipated from ideologies of blackness," Blacks must also have a couple of Ivy League degrees and connections up and out the wazoo for Obama to be "a model of blacks' possibilities."

You expected anything else from Will?
Do you remember the condescending list of questions he put in a column a few months back?
Ideologies of Blackness - that is too rich....putting Steele and blackness in the same sentence. It's a wonder that the computer didn't explode while typing it.
He is a model of blacks' possibilities when they are emancipated from ideologies of blackness, particularly those that, Steele says, "focus on self-respect apart from achievement."
Who the hell is Steele talking about? How about every other SUCCESSFUL Black person out here? Who the hell does Shelby Steele believes raised us?
Self-respect apart from achievement?
You self-hating clown. UGH
I try to picture Will making
I try to picture Will making an equivalent statement about "white's possibilities" in Apalachia.
What, pray tell, are
What, pray tell, are ideologies of blackness? Steele and his half-baked white allies write and talk as if black achievement, self-respect and respect for others were not for many generations long cherised values among black Americans; affluent and poor, learned and unread. We were human beings in the fullest sense of that term long before President Johnson signed the 1964 Civil Rights Bill.
Would Steele and Will's head explode if they
went to see The Great Debaters, ptcruiser?
I mean, Black Achievement in the what, 30's?
Forest Whitaker's character was a grown man with a PhD in the 30's.
Steele can't see things like that.....would undermine the swill he shills.
Meanwhile, many whites' self-esteem is derived . . .
in in significant part simply from being white in a nation that celebrates whiteness at every turn. And they think that's quite natural.
