Obama and Huckabee Win in Iowa Vote
By JOHN M. BRODER and ADAM NAGOURNEY

ABC!Senator Barack Obama won the Iowa Democratic caucuses tonight in a stunning show of strength by a young African-American candidate who was virtually unknown to America three years ago. He defeated Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, the former first lady, and former Senator John Edwards, the Democrats’ vice presidential nominee in 2004 by a substantial margin.

On the Republican side, Mike Huckabee, the folksy former Arkansas governor and Southern Baptist preacher, defeated the vastly better funded and organized Mitt Romney of Massachusetts, riding a wave of support by evangelical Christians who said they were drawn to Mr. Huckabee because they believed he shared their values.

The Iowa caucuses drew intense public interest and record turnout on the Democratic side, which featured three compelling candidates waging a fierce campaign that turned on the question of change versus experience. Democratic caucusgoers strongly endorsed Mr. Obama’s vow to change the nature of politics in Washington, decisively preferring his case to Mrs. Clinton’s emphasis on her experience in public life as a senator and the spouse of a president and a governor.

Mr. Romney conceded early in the evening after falling more than 10 percentage points behind Mr. Huckabee. Mr. Romney, who outspent Mr. Huckabee by more than four to one, conceded in an interview on Fox News. “Congratulations on the first round to Mike,” he said. But he described Iowa as the first inning of a “50-inning ballgame” and vowed to stay in it until the end.

Mr. Romney sought to frame his defeat as something of a comeback, saying he had trailed Mr. Huckabee by more than 20 points a few weeks ago. “I’ve been pleased that I’ve been able to make up ground, and I intend to keep making up ground, not just here but across the country,” he said.

Interesting...

When a majority white electorate picks a black man as their guy, what does say about America when we still have race issues?

Interesting to ponder.

Oh P6..the numbers are wonderful

He got 38%.

there were 212,000 Caucus goers, almost 100K more than last tiem.

Clinton came in THIRD.

And on the GOP side..

The Huckster, who was outspent 20-1 by Flipping Mitt...

SPANKED HIS ASS!

34 - 25 %

Better than that...Senator " No, I will NOT pander to you and support ethanol subsidies" McCain came in THIRD.

Good night.

Well, here you go...

T-Steel:

Now that I've gotten over the surprise of your return...

What it says in there a big segment of the white community that wants our race issues resolved, and they feel this is a step in that direction. If they didn't see racism as one of the problems they want addressed, they'd have gone for Edwards.

I'm back...

My absence from the blogging world and this blog in particular is a LONG story bruh.  But I'll put it this way, I almost checked out of this world due to illness, fought it hard, and won.  Now I'm back in the saddle.

I can't lie, I'm still stunned at Obama's win.  And I'm encouraged that a big segment of the white community wants our race issues resolved.  But the most interesting response will come from the BDE (Black Democratic Establishment).  They been riding the Hillary machine.  What they gon' do now?

Don't buy the lead in

Don't buy the lead in today's New York Times story. Voters in Iowa did NOT roll the dice.

T-Steel it is good to see you back

I've said that over my spot, but would like to reiterate it, particularly given some of the discussions we've been having about life stuff. Second best news I've gotten all year.

With that said, I'd disagree with P6 on why they voted for Obama rather than Edwards. Obama hasn't ever said explicitly that he's interested in dealing with racial issues. If anything I think the class politics of Iowans just aren't as strong as Edwards (and I) might want them to be. Or perhaps that they are strong, but they'd prefer a "hope-infused" (read soft line) approach rather than another one. Race is in there, but not in the way that folks are talking about it.

Or perhaps that they are

So where do we disagree? Laughing

You have to remember how collective white folks are. It only took one election for them to flip American politics, and it will only take one to flip it again when they decide which way they want it to go.

Another thing is, white folks are starting to admit they do not know anything about Black folks. And they've been trying to figure out Black folks since we were inserted into their lives. If they think you'll do it, they'll ask you about Black folks 'till one of you pass out.  IF Sen. Obama becomes Pres. Obama, white folks will be totally open.

Ahahaha!

If they think you'll do it, they'll ask you about Black folks 'till one of you pass out.

Oh, hell yeah. If we get permission to put away our fear, we won't shut up! Haw!!

If Obama wins, will white

If Obama wins, will white folks still think nooses are a laughing matter?

accept no substitutes......,

There will be no immediate

There will be no immediate change in day to day reactions.

This would be a collective change. That never has results you can connect in a cause-an-effect, eight ball in the corner pocket way.

Collective change affects the odds.

I saw that comment at Spence's. You saved me a link.

You'd lose the anti-war vote. But were it not for Iraq it would be a deadly ticket, and it would remove the point of assassinating the President.

Ah, P6...I've often thought a 'what if?'

' What IF' Powell had fought FOR the soldiers and resigned rather than lie at The UN. He would have been villified for a couple of years....but, by now?

Oh My Goodness... he would loom so large, it wouldn't be funny.

Sigh.

Does Obama have the capacity

Does Obama have the capacity to succeed where Steele and Ford failed?  And if so why?

So far, the only thing I see

So far, the only thing I see that all three tried to do is get elected. So yes.
