A great many conservatives — including many immigration restrictionists like VDH — have very kind and flattering things to say about Mexican-Americans, particularly those who've lived in America for many generations.

This is so condescendingly racist. Until the recent uptick in immigration, legal and illegal, more than 70 percent of the Latinos in this countries were native born. Now that figure is about 60 percent. My mother went to elementary school and high school with Mexican Americans in the 1930s and 1940s. They have always been here. Always.

Michael Steele is a rising star in the GOP in part because people hope he can persuade more blacks that Republican policies are in black America's interests and explain to Republicans that there are ways to reach out to blacks without compromising conservative principles.

A classic example of identity politics. White conservatives believe that Michael Steele can attract black people to the Republican Party because Michael Steele is black. Michael Steele is a rising star solely because he is black. That's it. 

Campaigning for John McCain.

Mike Steele doesn't want to get ANYWHERE NEAR Barack Obama on any kind of issue.

Especially on issues of racial identity.
