Defining the dogwhistle

Ferraro Everywhere

After Senator Clinton disavowed Geraldine Ferraro's comments about Obama and race, Ferraro proceeded to dig a little deeper by saying the Obama camp was harassing her because she was white. Surely she had become an embarassment to the Clinton campaign, I thought; we won't be seeing her much anymore.

But wait, here she is on Good Morning America (according to Time's summary):

Said “every time someone opens their mouth” to speak about Obama they are accused of racism. Stood by the comments, and is “absolutely not” sorry she made them.

She stopped by CBS's Early Show, too; clearly the Clinton folks see some benefit in stirring up these issues.

The point is to make white folks who aren't open racists sick and tired of hearing about race.

The MSM is dogwhistling as

The MSM is dogwhistling as well because they are not asking Ferraro about what she meant when she, in effect, said that Obama's standing in the Democratic Party primary race is because of the color of his skin. Talking about whether Ferraro is a racist or not is irrelevant and beside the point. The MSM does not believe that she is a racist because if they did they would not invite her on its programs. Her appearance on these programs signals a tacit collective agreement that the niggers are getting too big for their britches and are receiving notoriety that they don't deserve.

the mainstream media has

the mainstream media has never invited racists on before?

the point isn't to make people tired of hearing about race. this is the intra-party version of the jesse helms ad against harvey gant. it's to make people very very aware of race, very aware of obama's race and very aware of their own. so when blacks turn for him 90-10 they can use that implicitly to downplay the black vote (and to argue that it doesn't need to be part of the new democratic coalition), and when whites turn for her they can use that to argue that she should be the candidate because she can get "working class" votes that he can't get.

the fact that he can't get them any longer because she's bringing up race isn't important.

what is also different here is that a number of obama supporters (and msm folks like olberman) are bringing this up. the problem in the obama case is that HE isn't speaking out directly to this. and i think he has to. OR connect his message of hope to the left.

Yes, the mainstream media

Yes, the mainstream media has invited racists onto its programs in the past but it doesn't invite folks that it believes are racists. When was the last time, for example, that you saw an ardent and avowed anti-Semite appear on the Today Show?

I agree with your points about the strategy behind these attacks on Obama and what he should do to push them back. He should do it from the left.

Obama has spoken directly to Ferraro's comment

The MSM may not be publicizing his remarks, but it's all over the liberal blogs.  I talked to some white female Hillary supporters who said they're embarrassed by Ferraro's comment and Hillary's slight renunciation.  They don't see the point in her saying that--how does this help Hillary.  Now, it may well be "code" to those who will be reminded that "this affirmative action thing HAS gone too far," but it runs the risk of turning off women who see it as low-balling and a cheap shot.  That's Hillary's strategy throughout this campaign--take the high probability longshot to win, and completely overlook the obvious sure-thing.  Down by delegates AND the popular vote, one must ask:  How's that workin' out for you, Hill?

White feminists trailblazers

White feminists trailblazers had the same misgivings about the boundaries that black men were breaking following the Civil War.  Elizabeth Cady Stanton, the most prominent feminist of her day, called it "a serious question whether we had better stand aside and see 'Sambo' walk into the kingdom first."  It's amazing that Ferraro can turn historical record on its head and attract sympathy and positive publicity, but, yet, Samantha Power, a Pulitzer Prize winning author, is forced to disappear.

when whites turn for her

when whites turn for her they can use that to argue that she should be the candidate because she can get "working class" votes that he can't get

Is that last step even necessary? If she can split the electorate by race, doesn't she win?

it's to make people very

it's to make people very very aware of race, very aware of obama's race and very aware of their own.

I have to think about whether or not we disagree on a functional level. White folks in general have a low tolerance level for race.

If she can split the

If she can split the electorate by race, doesn't she win?

In the primaries, yes. But not in November.

If she succeeds in splitting the party by race that's the end of the Democratic Party.

Dogwhistle?

Most folks can't hear a dogwhistle. This one sounds more like a foghorn to me.

Somewhere else in the Blogsphere

The question was asked why the Democrats have allowed Hillary to "blow the dog whistle."  I replied as follows:

I can tell you why all of that didn't happen. It's really quick simple.

White liberal Democrats (of a certain age and orientation) are absolutely BESIDE THEMSELVES with the FACT that aside from all appearances, they no longer control the fate of their own party when it comes to PRESIDENTIAL Elections.

In fact, they haven't for decades.

No Democratic candidate for the office of POTUS has won, can win or will win WITHOUT the ENTHUSIASTIC, ACTIVE SUPPORT OF BLACK AMERICA. I would say it again, and louder, but there is no point. White Democrats openly and actively RESISTED the "intrusion" of Black folk into the party in 1964. After resisting the bodies in '64, they resisted the issues in 1968. Subsequently, they lost election after election until James Earl Carter (I'm not a fan) was able to win the enthusiastic and active support of Black America.

Carter's presidency catalyzed a backlash across the nation for several reasons...Iran was a huge part of that - but so was his pre-Clintonian model of "relative social ease" among Black folk - even though he did not deliver politically.

Democratic POTUS candidates have toed the line to see just how much distance they could KEEP from BLACK Folk in order to get elected. Mondale kept his distance. (Jesse or Gerry? Gerry or Jesse? Hmmm. Gerry! -- Neither has been heard from since - until last night.) Dukakis, Gore, Kerry. More of the same. Keeping that monotone, sleepy, "No Spooks Here" distance. Losers all.

And you know all about Slick Willie. He had a mixed bag. One minute he's bashing Lisa Williamson (Sista Souljah to you)...the next minute he's playing saxophone with Arsenio. And when it came to Black political prerogatives, his tenure is a map of concessions and give backs.

So folks like Mark Penn who pull in all this cream are really miffed and quite full of shit. They should know that once a "black enough" candidate emerged, that would energize the country...and since that candidate is not "too Black," it compels all the white candidates to move from the center-right toward the left.

No Democrat can win the office of POTUS without the enthusiastic and active support of Black America. They fought in 1964 and 1968 and 1984 and 1988. Even Al Gore, with knowledge that he'd won the popular vote AND that the margin was provided by Black voters in Florida SAID NOTHING because he knew that speaking up his own defense would place the BLACK ELECTORATE at the center of the Democratic Party in a way that could not be sustained among his peeps.

Didn't John Kerry do the exact same thing with votes in Ohio? Diebold machines ring a bell?

And what was Howard Dean really to do? He was not about to garner that enthusiastic and active support. He, too, would have conceded the White House - just as Gore and Kerry did.

These folks know that "race" allows them greater access to power than a shift in politics. They can remain as the "opposition" while retaining their electoral base - and keeping their critical distance away from "the Blacks."

It so happens that this perspective is not shared by a sizeable percentage of the American people who have simply had enough.

One of the comical aspects of Hillary's Final Dance is that her efforts are predicated on her belief (and that of her staff - from Mark Penn to Howard Wolf$@#! to Maggie Williams to Slick Willie) that Americans are essentially "racist" and inclined to embrace her desperate plea on some level.  It is a traditionally pessimistic, ivory tower view of the "people" which makes "leaders" blind to change.  Marie Antoinette has just served the cake a la Ferraro.  Her head should be cut off shortly.  As the guillotine swings low, she can always blame the Blacks.  It's what Ferraro did in 1984.

I wonder if she'd be miffed if her people were from Southern Italy or Sicily?

The Bride of Frankenstein

The Bride of Frankenstein resigned today from the Clinton campaign that she said couldn't fire her.

But not before Michael Steele volunteered to carry her water. There's a coon for every occasion. They wheel out the negrobot du jour on a dolly, pull the string and ...

Former Maryland Lieutenant Gov. Michael Steele, who is black, said that Ferraro’s comments are true, and the fact she can’t speak them “goes to the heart and ugliness of racism.” He said Obama’s candidacy is not diminished by her words, but an oversensitivity is harming debate in America.

This is posted over on Fox News. You can check it there. I don't want to stink up the joint with a link.

Oh, and yeah, I called that republican lawn jockey a coon. He's auditioning for the McSame administration. Zigabo Coordinator? Secretary of the Chiffirobe? The first Kneegrow VP? Whatever the case, he's ready to crawl the length of pennsylvania avenue to be of service to the status quo of "white" privilege.

You can't be too happy with

You can't be too happy with Ofari Hutchinson either.

I told you about Hutchinson MONTHS AGO

When the man couldn't write a POSITIVE STORY about Obama AFTER IOWA, it was so obvious - he is a Clinton shill. Period.

I am reluctant to read

I am reluctant to read anything about Michael Steele unless it is negative. Your descriptions of him, O, are priceless.

Does Steele think that we should be discussing whether Obama's standing has anything to do with his race? This kneegrow can't be serious. Does he think that the promotion he has received from the Republican Party is based on his merit or accomplishments? The masses of black people wil never take Steele and the rest of these manufactured kneegrowbots seriously.

Yeah, Ori Hutchinson is a shill for the Clinton campaign. Sad.

Yeah Ol' Earl is a

Yeah Ol' Earl is a lightweight, always has been. I read him only when feeling the urge to be profoundly underwhelmed.

Hutchinson has been using

Hutchinson has been using the minor celebrity he gained during and after the Watts Riots to promote himself. Is he still with Pacific News Service? I don't know why it hasn't found other black voices than his during the last 20 years or so of its existence.

Didn't Tavis anoint Steele

Didn't Tavis anoint Steele at his famous "State of the Black Ass" show down there in Naw'lins, make him one of the covenantals by inference and implication?

Never trust a dude who's lips move faster than the words coming out of his mouth.
