Can such a majority be built and led by Mr. Obama, whose voting record was, by one ranking, the most liberal in the Senate last year?
We've seen how irrational Republicans are about following Bush. Only two outcomes can keep them for causing even more problems: A Democratic President with a simple majority in both houses of Congress or a veto-proof majority in both houses. That's not the fault of any non-Republican.
But the majority already exists. Look at what the country wants...out of Iraq, affordable health care, jobs and housing, functioning schools. Results. There's even a progressive Democratic majority in Congress and enough of them are progressive that even Reid and Pelosi could pass legislation with a Democratic President.
Also, and more immediately, if Mr. Obama wins the Democratic nomination, how will his promise of a new and less polarized type of politics fare against the Republican attacks that since the 1980s have portrayed Democrats as far out of step with the country’s values?
By keeping their campaign promises. Duh.
