He isn't necessarily willfully purposefully racist in the Pat Buchanan Mold.  He is the next natural stop in the evolutionary chain of dominant white thought.  He presumes that White is the default setting.  Not necessarily the premium default setting...but just the default setting.  In the eyes of the Chris Matthews of the world...we will still be the other in his eyes.

It is nice to know that I may have a president who is as bad a bowler as I am.  I think there are a lot of "regular people" who are bad bowlers, and now we have a candidate who represents us.

Matthews never had any contact with black folks until he joined the Peace Corps and was sent to Louisiana for training and, later, to Africa. It is difficult to erase that kind insulated upbringing especially for an Irish Catholic from Philadelphia. A lot of those folks are still celebrating Villanova's victory over Georgetown.
