Obama Quits His Church
By Jeff Zeleny
WASHINGTON – Senator Barack Obama is ending his membership at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, a congregation he has belonged to for about two decades and one that had become a lightning rod in his Democratic presidential bid.
Mr. Obama informed his campaign advisers of his decision today, according to people familiar with the situation, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak for the candidate. Mr. Obama is scheduled to explain his decision tonight in South Dakota.
For Mr. Obama, this is the latest effort to distance himself from a church that had repeatedly drawn negative attention to his candidacy. And, in turn, Mr. Obama drew negative attention to the church on Chicago’s South Side, where he was married and his two daughters were baptized.

Disappointing
I am very disappointed. He's having to leave because the overwhelming majority of white Americans are deluded. That can't even see the racism and white supremacy in the fact that though they know nothing about the church besides it's "Unapologetically Black," and they certain know nothing of experiencing racism, they can smear a predominantly black church so vilely that a man who's been a member there 20years has to leave.
I understand the concern they have for who's going to be president. But their "concern" about Obama is based on racism, fear, and ignorance. How arrogant are white people that they demand everybody experience and love the US-KKK-A the way they do? It's sickening.
Too Late
Too late.
Plus, now I'm thinking the church is deliberately trying to undermine him.
You can "quit" a church?
LOL...I didn't actually know that one had to do anything more than stop going to a church to quit it :)....Damned if it doesnt suck tho, doing so at this moment in time (whatever his reasoning) as its bloody late in the process (and thus might not be able to help him out in the nomination process) and also actually makes the statements these wing nuts on fox et al were saying about the church and black liberation theology in general see like they were valid or like they have the right to demand such behavior on Obama's part :(
Darkstar, I think so too, and I didn't want to think it
sigh
well
Reports are that part of the reason they're leaving is because they felt the scrutiny was unfair to the church.
I don't think the church is actively trying to undermine him.
Black Skin, White Masks
I think Sen. Obama's clergy aren't malicious so much as categorically indifferent to the risk of a backlash. They really don't think it matters that the news media and conservative bloggers are going to exploit what they say.
I'm not famous so what I write doesn't matter
But, I'm thinking the same thing.
"They really don't think it matters that the news media and conservative bloggers are going to exploit what they say."
I mean, other than having a black person as the figure head of a racist system, what do we gain?
That's excatly why I won't be voting for Obama
Because he is a guy who will not stand on strong ground when it comes to challenging conservatives on their racial hypocrisy. A party that is allied with Eugenics, Racialists, Bigots, closeted homosexuals and homophobes, Christian Nut Jobs, and Paranoid Media and doesn't call out that same party for their BS does not deserve my vote and Black Folks trying to keep quiet so they "make history" with a person who has not explanied what he will do for Black America or at best, has kept them at arms length is a PIG in my opinion. I would rather vote for a Ralph Nader/Cynthia Mc Kinney ticket, at least I know they are looking out for people like me. Father Pleger and Rev. Wright has done more for the African- American community than Obama will ever do in two lifetimes, that "half negro" is Bill Clinton lite.
What's up with The Roots
What's up with The Roots website posting five (5) articles about Obama resigning from Trinity?
That's five different
That's five different feeds...they didn;t write the stuff in that left column.
These latest events confirm
These latest events confirm that Americans--black and white--have not come to terms with the aspects of the civil rights movement that weren't concerned with integration and cultural assimilation.
P6 - You mean the right hand
P6 - You mean the right hand column? I mean why would their editors post five articles on the same story?
PT: Okay, they got blogs and
PT:
Okay, they got blogs and blogroll column, the news column (which is newswires), views column (which they write) and ad column. I only ever notice the middle two.
ubstu34:
I'm not sure they're cool with integration and cultural assimilation either.
Don't know why The Root would have all those stories about this.
I was watching the local news today, and the response of Trinity was, 'you have the letter from Senator Obama, now get off our property or we'll call the police'.
I had to laugh at that.
