All respect and no restraint

This is not about Iran

This is going to be about Black folks.

I want you to hold a specific statement Ms. Slavin made in mind: "The last time I checked, Iran was not threatening to attack the United States but there were many people inside the United States threatening to attack Iran." Keep that in mind as you read this

But the black nationalist in me gets pissed at the implicit message of the hard-core black left--that the only change worth discussing is changes in the law.

...because in my experience it is white folks who insist we cannot speak of racial justice until Black behavior is perfect. Not only that, if ANY Black person misbehaves that's seen as validation of their suspicions about us.

Let's be real. Take a Black person whose strength and ambition is typical for a human. Let this Black person strive to advance to the limits of their ability...sooner or later they come to the place where they can go no further. And when they look around to identify they obstacles, restrictions and limitations that mark the limit of their progress, racism will be among those items, often quite promenently.

I sometimes compare the disregard for civil rights fostered by Conservatives to dropping federal regulations in favor of voluntary codes of behavior. And the curious thing is that the foremost of those in 'the hard-core black left' are of the same pedigree as...is there a hard-core black right?

In my experience we pursue changes in the law because that's the only thing we CAN change, and because if we don't no one will.

I thought that Nquest's response to Coates came closer to the heart of the issue than what Coates wrote. Our collective and individual experiences in America has taught us that pursuing changes in the law is what works for us.
