First anniversary of Chauncey Bailey’s murder: impunity still prevails

On the eve of the first anniversary of Chauncey Bailey’s murder, Reporters Without Borders is very disappointed that the investigation has not made any progress. Instead, the case has become more complicated as aspects surrounding the motives for Bailey’s murder have been unleashed. Evidence, some recorded by the police and some uncovered by investigative reporters, points at someone other than the currently accused defendant as a potential perpetrator(s) and/or mastermind(s) of the crime, and suggests that local police officials may be protecting those responsible for Mr. Bailey’s death. Reporters Without Borders also disapproves of Oakland Police Chief Tucker and Deputy Chief Howard A. Jordan’s unwillingness to talk to the media.

The press freedom organization is launching a petition calling for "Justice for Chauncey Bailey" and urging the Attorney General of the United States of America to take the lead in the case.

"All those responsible for the murder, the perpetrator(s), the mastermind(s) and those protecting them, must be brought to justice," states Reporters Without Borders in the petition. "This important case must be taken away from the local officials and brought to the federal level in order to avoid further bias, pressure and conflicts of interests, and, to allow a thorough and impartial investigation."

"Chauncey Bailey was killed because of his work as a journalist" added the organization. "Murders of reporters are rare in the United States. In informing people and denouncing public wrongdoings, the news media play an important role in the checks and balances that are essential to any democracy. The justice system has to send a strong signal to those who would silence the media, and show them that impunity will not prevail. We call upon press freedom supporters to sign the petition to show public support for a swift resolution of the murder".

On August 2nd, 2007, Bailey, the late editor for the Oakland Post, was walking to work when he was gunned down by a masked man in downtown Oakland.

The day after, the police department raided the facility of Your Black Muslim Bakery, suspecting some of its employees were involved in the killing, as well as other unrelated felonies. A group of young men who worked at the Bakery and were adopted by Yusuf Bey, the founder of the bakery, were already well-known because of involvement in previous crimes, ranging from vandalism to kidnapping. The leader of this particular group of young men was Yusuf Bey IV, of the Bey family.

Bey IV and others were apprehended that night. Devaughndre Broussard, the youngest and newest member of the Bakery employees, confessed to killing Bailey, after an unrecorded conversation with Bey IV without the presence of an officer. Broussard later recanted and his lawyer, LeRue Grim, stated his client’s confession was coerced.

As of Friday, 1, August, Broussard was scheduled to begin his trial on 19 September 2008 at 9:00 a.m. No one else has been charged even as an indirect participant.

Bailey’s murder was prompted by his work as a reporter, specifically on his story regarding the bakery finances and their possible link to police corruption. The story was never published because certain information could not be verified. Oakland Post’s Publisher Paul Cobb received police protection earlier this year after being told that a contract had been put out for his murder.

There has been growing evidence that the leading investigator, Stg. Derwin Longmire, has been protecting Bey IV. Saleem Bey, Bailey’s secret source about the bakery finances, spoke about Oakland’s Police Department’s reputation for corruption. Recently, a video recorded by a hidden camera at the police department showed Bey IV describing in detail how Bailey was killed but denying ever being at the murder scene. Bey IV also talked about Sgt. Longmire’s intention to protect him and the bakery. After the video’s release, Bey IV said he knew the police were recording him and that he made false statements to mislead them.

Alameda County District Attorney Tom Orloff stated recently that he will not pursue an investigation about Bey IV’s possible involvement in the Bailey murder, because he already faces life in prison for other crimes. Orloff later retracted these comments by saying that pursuing an investigation on Bey IV’s unrelated crimes would buy time to develop a case regarding his connection to Bailey’s murder, and that such information might come out during Broussard’s trial.

Dispatches from the frontline

His story wasn't about the finances it was about the COINTELPRO operation that led to an illegal bankruptcy. One of these days they will get it correct.

We had a very productive rally today calling for an independent investigation and have started a petition to be presented to the city council to force their hand and call for an independent investigation.

BTW OPD has 4 officer involved shootings in the last 2 weeks and at least one in the back.

The Pathetic Corporate Media

The Rally,
Good thing I was there because the local coverage is horrific, We blasted them for letting a outside news organization take the lead in calling for an independent investigation. There were 6 news cameras out there and none of the video was shown and only a couple of sentences on two stations during the 11 pm news. Its sad out here when a fellow journalist's murder is being covered up and they are not screaming at the top of their lungs. I know he was black... but dam the level of disrespect is staggering.
We are going to keep their feet in the fire til justice is served.

I'm glad you're here

I'm glad you're here Sandman. Your personal interest mankes sure I'm up on what happens here...and if I know, everyone who reads P6 will know too.

The Whole Truth...

"...His story wasn't about the finances it was about the COINTELPRO operation that led to an illegal bankruptcy."

(...Needless to say, I'm still anxiously waiting to see exactly what it is that no one has been able to corroborate yet!)

Can they NOT run with what they have, minus the uncorroborated, or is what's missing the linchpin to the entire story?

THE REAL STORY

Excellent point, after almost a year of all the major newspapers in the Bay Area printing every scurrilous allegation they could dig up under a rock about the entire Bey family, if it was just about the finances everything has been reported. So what else was in there, that hasn't seen the light of day? Truth is the story was suppressed.

The truth is, the story was corroborated, when POST owner Paul Cobb pulled the story the first time, Chauncey came back to me and I said we had a law firm that could validate everything in the story. Chauncey took that to Cobb who said the only way he would run the story is if the lawyer signed an affidavit and agreed to have his name and picture in the story. he figured that was the end of that
I called the lawyer and asked him myself, he said fax him the story. Chauncey faxed the exact story to the lawyer who typed up the affidavit, signed it and faxed it to Chauncey and agreed to have his name and picture in the story. Chauncey took it to Cobb, then Chauncey called me and said the story was coming out in the Friday edition, then two days later he called and apologized saying that Cobb pulled it again, that was the last time I spoke to him which was about ten days before.

How much more corroboration do you need, how many law firms would sign something about a newspaper article? and how many lawyers would agree to the outrageous demands Chauncey's boss put on him?

Things that make you go hmmmmm.......Coincidently Paul Cobb was a Jerry Brown mayoral appointee to the OUSD school board. And the day of the murder OPD Longmire said THE STORY was immaterial and that he didn't want it or need to see the story and that was the last time OPD mentioned THE STORY. which means the contents are not documented in evidence

Thank God 4 P6

I heard Bob Butler a San

I heard Bob Butler a San Francisco Bay Area journalist on NPR's News & Notes program interviewed by Tony Cox regarding the murder of Chauncey Bailey. Butler is involved in the Chauncey Bailey Project. Butler's comments clarified and confirmed a few things that I had long suspected. The first is that the Oakland Police Department's investigation of this crime has been severely compromised not because of any alleged COINTELPRO connections, but as a direct result of a strong relationship between the department's lead investigator and Yusef Bey IV, the former head of Your Black Muslim Bakery. The failure of the police department to remove the lead investigator from the case and call for an independent investigation is extremely suspicious.

The second is that the confessed murderer did not and could not have acted alone. Someone, for example, had to have driven the vehicle that he used to flee in after Bailey was killed. It is highly unlikely that a member of the police department or FBi was driving the getaway van. Finally, the charges and accusations that have been made against the bakery and several of its past leaders were reasonable and in some cases were proven.

Brain Freeze

First of all, PT I learned my lesson with you in the last thread, its a waste of valuable time trying to make you see other than the status quo perspective your locked into, stick with the MSM spoon feeding and believe them until they come around to telling you the same thing I'm telling you. I know more about every aspect of this case than anyone who just started with the murder of CB. The FBI, OPD intelligence unit and ATF showed their hand March 1st 2004 I have been living this since then.

I know Bob Butler, I speak with him regularly, the CB project just apologized to my brother and myself on Saturday after I chastise them at the rally for wasting 8 months on my family with no connection to CB's murder. For letting Reporters without Borders have the guts to call for an independent investigation while they beg OPD for basic answers, and for not finding the connection between our call for an ind. Inv months before CB's death and the real police story CB was working on.

Did Bob say that the lead investigator Det. Longmire was the head of Oakland police intelligence unit, Before he was "transfered" to homicide and became the lead investigator on IV's brother's murder case and then befriended IV? And still was assigned by OPD to be the lead Det. on Chauncey? Even though they know his documented relationship with IV could compromise the case? Oakland Police intelligence, a covert group, is the same unit that is responsible for building a case against the Bakery. ( and the Panthers for that matter )

How stupid do you have to be, to leave the unit you know is actively watching and working on the Bakery while you were the head and join forces with the Bakery while they are under active surveillance by OPD and FBI? Every move he made was documented. Longmire couldn't have allowed 4 concurrent bails for IV only the D.A. can

I have no idea what you are referring to. Why don't you try ignoring what I write since you believe that it is a waste of your valuable time. BTW, so the late Yusef Bey, the father of Yusef Bey IV, never had sexual relations with underage females. Is this part of what you are arguing, brother? That all of those girls etc. just lied?

So this article by Askia Muhammad, a former Nation of Islam minister and others is just a pack of lies too put together by the OPD, the FBI and gods knows who else in your pantheon of police conspiracies.

Whats that got to do with Chauncy Bailey?

How the hell does Dr. Bey's personal crime ( who died in 2003 ) invalidate a COINTELPRO operation? They are mutually exclusive since we are talking about the murder of Chauncey Bailey and the operation that led to his murder, 4 years later, Blind people are so quick to jump on a band wagon they don't know who is steering.

I spent 10 years in the Bakery and my record is crystal clear. My Brother's record is crystal clear, the brother who was kidnapped and murdered didn't have a record. No on the board of directors had a record, Over 98% of the family doesn't have any record at all. There are 150 people in our extended family can you say the same about your family? Is every Catholic in the church labeled a criminal cause of what the priest did? And if we delve into every Christian church we find a history of pastor and preacher malfeasance across the spectrum, does that mean every congregation is criminal? Stop buying into the generalizing its a shield for the weak minded. As for Askia ( former NOI min.) ask him about the vilification of Elijah Muhammad, Min Khalid and Min Farrakahn to see if the the knife cuts both ways for his association before he quit and started telling "tales".

In 2004 the Bakery was taken over in a Coup, that's a fact that Chauncey was writing about, between 2004 and 2007 you have FBI and OPD involvement and over 35 different arrests of Bakery members vs 10 over a 36 year period. After the thorough press and opd investigation where's the crime empire prior to the take over? what do you have except opinions and here say. If you use the same litmus test against SF or Oakland city hall you will find more crime than in the Bakery over the 36 year period before the take over.... Intelligent people do the math.

You rather focus on the sensational news than look at the nuts and bolts of service to the black community. What about all the people hired and businesses created? The Bakery was an economic and political engine in our community. When you take people off the street and hire people straight out of jail your not dealing with angels yet there never was a raid on the Bakery and other than individuals that have gotten in there own trouble there is no evidence of a criminal empire outside the press vilification.

Your a lap dog for the establishment, I could just as easy quote all the accolades the Bakery has gotten over the same period of time from every major Bay Area newspaper, politician, major churches and lots of civic organizations. Where's the proof outside your skewed media based opinions.
