Might as well start here...if I don't I'll get drummed out of the Democrats and have my brother status placed on probation.
I found out my cynicism is genetic...my mom said, "She gave a nice speech. Who wrote it?"
I never paid close attention to the political conventions before. This time I had it running as background noise for a good chunk of the day; maybe I'm still not paying close attention, but it struck me as an exercise in tribalism on a scale I find difficult to grasp. This is not an intellectual affair we are engaged in.
The winner of an election is generally going to be the person that best validates the aspirations of the electorate. Because people identify with their aspirations rather than their status.
Based on that standard, she (and her speechwriters) did very well.

I've heard Michelle speak on
I've heard Michelle speak on several occasions. Whoever wrote the previous speeches wrote this one, too.
She's one of those black folks who finds America's overall goodness outweights it's ills. So, I think that "love my country" stuff was genuine.
My assessment
I believe that what she says publically (politically) versus how she speaks at the kitchen table is closer to how Chris Rock said old black men act in public " yes sir Mr. Charlie" versus what they say in private...cracka ass crackas
I have no way of backing up my assessment, its just an opinion based upon past and present information at hand. I think she has learned to be the "good" wife of a high profile politician but I would guess that she agrees more with Jeremiah than Condaleeza
I would bet she agrees more
I would bet she agrees more with Jeremiah than "Condi." And I bet she won't let anyone give her some "pet name."
"my brother status placed on probation." - oh P6!
LOL
But, really. I was wondering when you were going to post something.
Now Sandman and no1skate, aren't you feeding into the ' Michelle as Angry Black Woman' memo?
Me? I believe she's a thinking Black person, so take whatever conclusion you want from that.
LOL! Yeah, but this is
LOL! Yeah, but this is "black" space. And what white folks don't know we say when they ain't around won't hurt us.
And besides, why shouldn't we be angry? Cause of all the opportunities we have? Because of the quality treatment we receive? Because today, we can advertise cleaning products, kitchen products, and cosmetics?
Though, I gotta say, mainstream America's fear of the "angry black woman" is kinda funny. It's like they think if they look at us wrong, we'll slap them. One time, we were having trouble getting our room at this high-class hotel in Asheville, NC. And my mom had had a long day, and I could tell she about to cross her "angry black woman" line. Next thing I know, we had a room in one of the top floor suite singles. Flat screen TV. Fridge. A bed like nothing else. So . . . let's not hate too hard on the stereotype.
LOL! Yeah, but this is
I get over 1000 page views per day. At least a couple of them know.
Yeah, P6, I know. But don't
Yeah, P6, I know. But don't destroy the fantasy. I come here for respite.
Speechwriters or not, I
Speechwriters or not, I think the imprint was definitely Michelle. Certainly the delivery was. Plus she/they have been working on those themes for a while.
"Now Sandman and no1skate,
"Now Sandman and no1skate, aren't you feeding into the ' Michelle as Angry Black Woman' meme?"
Yeah, there is a lot of projection going on about Michelle Obama. I get it but I wish folks would give it a rest. 'Specially black folks.
I believe she wrote it herself
I read that somewhere.
Her thoughts, polished with
Her thoughts, polished with the help of speechwriters. It was complete and she was comfortable with it about a month ago.
