Republicans already had a hip-hop makeover

Oh, this is relevant, too.

It's some stuff at the end of the page here, too.

Steele: GOP needs 'hip-hop' makeover

NEWSMAKER INTERVIEW:

Newly elected Republican National Committee Chairman Michael S. Steele plans an “off the hook” public relations offensive to attract younger voters, especially blacks and Hispanics, by applying the party's principles to “urban-suburban hip-hop settings.”

The RNC's first black chairman will “surprise everyone” when updating the party's image using the Internet and advertisements on radio, on television and in print, he told The Washington Times.

Having been elected to the job that the Bush White House and its political guru, Karl Rove, once denied him, Mr. Steele is running the show his way. To those who claimed he can't make the trains run on time, he has this message: “Stuff it.”

He stiff-armed an attempt to get him to elaborate on his public relations effort, saying he would be an idiot to give his opponents too much information, but indicated the Republican Party needs to break out of being considered a regional party.

”There was underlying concerns we had become too regionalized and the party needed to reach beyond our comfort” zones, he said, citing defeats in such states as Virginia and North Carolina. “We need messengers to really capture that region - young, Hispanic, black, a cross section ... We want to convey that the modern-day GOP looks like the conservative party that stands on principles. But we want to apply them to urban-surburban hip-hop settings.”

But, he elaborated with a laugh, “we need to uptick our image with everyone, including one-armed midgets.”

This is the first I've seen

This is the first I've seen of it.

I got no issues with the bit you quoted. I'll watch the whole thing tomorrow and get back with you on it.

Re: implication[s] on the authenticity and viability of black partisanship...this is from the very first use of the term, anywhere, ever.

I am a Black partisan--one of those people that actively choose to accept racial kinship. My position is simple and straightforward-every event that affects Black people affects me. Therefore there is a connection between myself and other Black people that I must respond to in some fashion. What the mainstream thinks of Black people in general becomes my starting point in any new situation. My feelings of kinship with Black folks represents my recognition that my fate is linked to that of everyone else of visible African descent and my feelings of loyalty represents my recognition that the fate of everyone else of visible African descent is linked to mine.

There's a million directions you can go to from there, be a Democrat Black Partisan, a Socialist Black Partisan, a Middle Class Black Partisan, an Activist Black Partisan and what you do will be done from this perspective, in the situation at hand, with the material at hand.

But I have to put it this way to talk about it and rationalize with and about it. Take it from words back to reality and tell me if there's any question about that authenticity and viability of Jewish Partisanship. Or NASCAR Dad Partisanship. Or Feminist Partisanship.

You can question their style or even their effectiveness but not their authenticity or existence.

The quote you took from Holder's speech, out of context, is correct in general. Conversation that leads to understanding (and hence change) must begin, and when it begins not a damn thing will have changed yet, except the willingness to understand and change.

Stay tuned GOP, you are not

Stay tuned GOP, you are not done getting your asses kicked.
