Under Fire, Paterson Ends His Campaign for Governor
By DANNY HAKIM and JEREMY W. PETERS

Gov. David A. Paterson ended his campaign for election on Friday amid crumbling support from his party and an uproar over his administration’s intervention in a domestic violence case involving a close aide.

The announcement came less than a week after Mr. Paterson formally announced his candidacy.

The governor acknowledged that the episode involving his longtime aide David W. Johnson had become a distraction, but he vowed to serve out the remaining 308 days of his term and remain focused on his work.

“There are times in politics when you have to know not to strive for service, but to step back, and that moment has come for me,” Mr. Paterson told a room full of reporters in an afternoon news conference.

In the most dramatic moment, the governor raised his right hand and offered what he called a “personal oath,” stressing that he had not abused his power in his response to the domestic violence case.

“I have never abused my office, not now, not ever,” said Mr. Paterson, his wife, Michelle Paige Paterson, by his side.

“I believe that when the facts are reviewed, the truth will prevail,” he added.

This would be silly if you couldn't document it

The system only allows for a certain amount of trickle-up before the feedback loop kicks in and self-corrects. When Harold Ford went public with his intentions, it put NY under undue strain. I mean, TWO black people in high office representing the state? No way. There may be NONE (original stasis), but no way you can have TWO without redesigning the system.

Paterson gave them the ammo

I wanna feel bad for him.....

I mean, TWO black people in

I wish we could test the validity of your hypothesis with a candidate other than someone like Harold Ford. I wouldn't vote for him if I lived in New York. Heck, I wouldn't have voted for him if I lived in Tennessee. As for Gov. Paterson, he had a tough enough row to hoe without involving himself in his aide's problems. He should not have made the telephone call period. It doesn't matter whether his intentions were honorable or not. What arrogance on his part.

I am hearing pt about Dark Sith Ford

tell me about it.

I'd rather have none than two in this case.

And another thing

This isn't a corollary to my ill-developed concept above, but I couldn't help notice the following about Charlie Rangel in the NYT, close on the heels of the Paterson scandal, or "scandal" if you prefer.

EDITORIAL
Relieve the Chairman of His Gavel

Congressman Charles Rangel was far from humbled after the ethics committee admonished him for taking corporate-paid Caribbean junkets in violation of the House ethics code. Rather, the New York Democrat berated the panel’s leaders on the House floor.

The moment was characteristic of Mr. Rangel’s arrogance throughout the investigation, which continues into more serious allegations about his official behavior. It is one more reason why Speaker Nancy Pelosi — who championed ethics reform — should stop protecting him and relieve him of his crucial role as chairman of the Ways and Means Committee.

Congressman Charles Rangel

Congressman Charles Rangel was far from humbled

And humbling him is the point, I guess. Though frankly, when politicians say they are humbled they tend to mean the exact opposite of that.

On humility

when politicians say they are humbled they tend to mean the exact opposite of that.

When they say it about themselves, you mean. To humble as a transitive verb is "to lower in dignity or importance" which is what the NYT editorial board obviously wants. Rangel was "arrogant" (their word) long before anyone ever heard of Obama, Paterson, Ford... I just think the timing's interesting.

I just think the timing's

I just think the timing's interesting.

Plot the serious attacks against Obama's ascension to the Presidency. I've always felt a Black Ways and Means chair and a Black President was just too much for too many folks.

Heh... self-correcting system theory is still in business!

I've always felt a Black Ways and Means chair and a Black President was just too much for too many folks.

There may be NONE (original stasis), but no way you can have TWO without redesigning the system.

BTW if Hillary Clinton had won the Presidency, this could be generalized beyond blackness in terms of her and Nancy Pelosi. Has anyone noticed that Pelosi is right behind Biden for succession to the Presidency? Oh, you did.

I've always felt a Black

You might be right but do you think that Rangel's self-dealing and "sharp practices," as the Brits refer to acts that skirt the law, are without substance? I don't like Willie Brown, for example, but no one, as far as I know, has ever been able to pin the sort of stuff on him that seems to be attracted to Charlie Rangel. Not a bit of it.

do you think that Rangel's

do you think that Rangel's self-dealing and "sharp practices," as the Brits refer to acts that skirt the law, are without substance?

The events pretty obviously happened. I think, even with the harshest spin possible (which would be that he used his office ofr personal enrichment), the events I've heard of are not they type that would influence the stuff that comes before the Ways and Means Committee...and that's one hell of a lot of stuff. So I guess my position is, with proper triage the Ethics Committee ought to get to Rangel maybe three weeks before he retires.
